Watching reruns of American Gladiator in the back bar last week everyone got a kick out of the seriously outdated hair styles of the Gladiators, both men (mullets) and women(teased), but underneath all the hype (and gel) we realize this was after all show business, not really athletics.
That said, check out the Sports Illustrated cover shot of the University of Texas women's track team from 1964, not very aerodynamic to say the least, more like crash helmets.

Tony's Ship Comes In

Here's Green Parrot Bartender Alumni Tony Jonas, AKA Parrot Tony or Russian Tony. Tony was staple around the Parrot throughout the 70's and 80's. His parties at his house around the corner from the bar, feasts for scores and scores of people really,were legend. Tony was 7 years old in 1952, when he and his family traveled from Germany to New York on the Vandenberg, then known as the Gen. Harry Taylor. "I was a little kid on a big boat," Jonas recalled.

Here's a post from a while back that I've reprised as kind on an intro to a link I received today about a Hendrick's Gin-sponsored event held recently in New York.

Maybe The Green Parrot could have a Hendrick's Croquet Tournament on the lawn at The Little White House, a la Womenkind.

At first glance, Hendrick's, a small-batch, hand-crafted gin produced in Scotland looks like it would be more at home on an apothecary shelf than a bar rail. And it just gets weirder from there. Enjoying a sort of cult status in this country, Hendrick’s has chosen delicate infusions of cucumber and rose petals rather than heavily-scented botanicals to build a following.
I crafted myself a Hendrick's Gin and Tonic when I got home from work, and while eschewing the cucumber slice for the traditional lime wedge, was won over in short order by its' subtle virtues.
I may even craft another right now.

I did, in fact, make another.
In the background to the right is my son Dan's version of Zuccotto, the chilled Italian dessert made of brandy-laced slices of pound cake and filled with alternate layers of almond and chocolate cream. It's dome shape is said to have been inspired to the shape of the cupola of the Duomo of Florence.
