"Perfect Jamband" Heavy Pets Return to Green Parrot

“The Heavy Pets return to The Green Parrot on Friday and Saturday, July 23rd and 24th with shows at 5:30 and 10 P.M.The Heavy Pets are an American rock and roll band whose contagious vibe blends rhythm and blues, jazz-funk and reggae fusion with homegrown rock and roll. The Heavy Pets are known for powerhouse performances spiked with hot electric licks and multi-climactic instrumental solos, as well as for their masterful acoustic acumen.
In 2007, the group became an instant Sirius radio sensation with the release of their acclaimed double-disc debut album, Whale, driven by hit tracks “Operation of Flight” and “Sleep.” Major festival darlings, The Heavy Pets are regulars at Bonnaroo, moe.down, Langerado, New Orleans Backbeat Jazzfest, and their namesake PetZoo, a two-day, multi-band festival that draws hordes of Pets devotees to Bucks County, PA, to feast on the headliners’ live alchemy.
The Heavy Pets seemed to have gotten a makeover. The South Florida jam band sports a new label, a new booking agency and they’ve just released a polished new album with the help of a heavy-weight producer.
But these five guys – guitarists Mike Garulli and Jeff Lloyd, keyboardist Jim Wuest, bassist Justin Carney and drummer Jamie Newitt – are sticking to what has worked for them for the past few years: endless touring, hitting every major city in the Northeast, South and Midwest as well as a host of summer festivals.

"The Pets just might be a perfect jamband" says Dennis Cook, of Jambase.com
"...The greatest jamband to come out of Florida since, well, ever..." "They are an arena ready band without the arena. At its best the band is a living, breathing, force of nature-a whale." said Dan Sweeney of Relix Magazine
In addition to priding themselves on impeccable musicianship, the band
has a staggering catalog of original material,
The HeavyPets combine elegant songwriting with blazing chops, tight vocal
harmonies, and a heavy, danceable backbeat. Don't miss this
opportunity to catch one of South Florida's most dynamic and aspiring
bands.
Reports are that they have been on FIRE lately and are super
pumped for their Key West gig so look for The Pets to blow the roof
off this legendary watering hole when they explode onto The Parrot's
stage this weekend.
The Green Parrot Bar is your Southernmost Center for Culture at
the corner of Whitehead and Southard Streets. For additional

"Set the Wayback Machine" or Tell Cave-Man Dave we Got His Beer in

Since we've started serving Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA at The Parrot we've had a few posts about Dogfish Head owner San Calagione's penchant for resurrecting long-lost recipes for malt beverages, such as Midas Touch, created from sediment found on drinking vessels in the tomb of King Midas in Turkey, or making a batch of chicha, a traditional Latin American corn beer. but we're in Way-Back Machine Territory with this one.

Aged 9,000 Years, Ancient Beer Finally Hits Stores
or
Scraping The Bottom Of The Beer Barre
l

Dogfish Head brewery is known for making exotic beer with ingredients like crystallized ginger or water from Antarctica, so it might not sound surprising that one of its recent creations is a brew flavored simply by grapes and flowers. It's not the recipe that makes this beer so special; it's where that recipe was found: a Neolithic burial site in China.
Chateau Jiahu is a time capsule from 7,000 B.C., but to hear Dogfish Head owner Sam Calagione talk about what beer was actually like back then, it's not the kind of thing that makes you say "Hey, pass me another ice-cold ancient ale!"

a vintage photo of Norman"Sailor Jerry: Collins.

On Thursday, July 15th, beginning at 8:30 P.M., The Green Parrot Bar will host a screening of The Sailor Jerry documentary Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: A Film About The Life and Times of American Tattoo Master Norman Collins.

This bona fide cultural event, sponsored by Premier Beverage and Sailor Jerry Rum,will also include Sailor Jerry prizes and giveaways, rum drink specials served by The Sailor Jerry Girls, and as always at the Green Parrot, free popcorn to munch on while you watch the movie. After the screening the entertainment continues with an Afterparty featuring the Bill Blue Band and more Sailor Jerry run drink specials and more free popcorn.

Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry is a feature length documentary exploring the roots of American tattooing through the life of its most iconoclastic figure, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins. Known to most as Sailor Jerry, the film examines his life on the water, in the parlor and in the flesh of his devotees.

Considered by many the foremost tattoo artist of all time, Collins is the father of modern day tattooing, whose uncompromising lifestyle and larger than life persona made him an American legend. Through rare interviews, photographs and hours of archival footage, Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life and Times of Norman Keith Collins, explores the past, present and future of the global tattooing phenomenon.

The Green Parrot is your Southernmost Center for Culture of
all kinds, and is located at the corner of Whitehead and Southard
Streets. For additional information call The Green Parrot at 294-6133.

Abe's Strange Trip

Of course we all know that there's a story behind every object that graces the walls of the Parrot but this is one of the better ones.

Seeing the story in today's Key West Citizen about the family of Dr.Mudd visiting Key West this week prompts me to tell the story of the day we hung the Lincoln portrait it The Parrot.

Pictured above is Ben who donated this spendid Lincoln portrait to us back in '95.
The details surrounding the gifting of this picture bear repeating.
Ben, who lived just a few doors down from the Parrot on Whitehead Street was moving to Hawaii and felt that some of his carefully selected home decor would fit right in at the Parrot.
He repeatedly reminded me to stop by before he moved out and I repeatedly drove by his house in my van, sometimes several times a day, each time thinking to myself." I gotta stop and see what he's got in there", but never stopping.
Weeks passed and finally one afternoon as I pass I see Ben stacking stuff up on his porch. He sees me and shouts "I'm outa here today!" And what catches my eye but this oversized portait of Honest Abe.  Seeing it I pull sharply to the curb across from his house, step across Whitehead and onto his porch to admire the framed portrait.
"What did I tell you?", Ben says.
"Damn", I says.
Following our brief exchange I rolled open the door of my VW Transporte and placed Abe in the back.
Here's were the story gets interesting.
Sometimes things that get donated to the Parrot don't always work their way into the Parrot decor right away. Not just sometimes, nearly always. It takes weeks, months or even years for donated objects to find their niche into the friendly confines. We don't plan it that way. It's just how it is.
But not this time.
Just a few weeks before, Good Time Charlie, our former house DJ had returned from a several-year stint in The Far East with The Ringling Brothers Circus. Before Charlie shoved off for China, he gave us, for safekeeping,  an autographed Michael Jordan Jersey which we proudly displayed, in it's beautiful frame, above the juke box.
Well, now Charlie blew back  into town, staying barely long enough for  a beer, but long enough to reclaim his jersey  and leave a large unpainted rectangle where our centerpiece had been. I think we put a Gretsky jersey up in it's place but I don't think it lasted 48 hours before being mercifully replaced by the unpainted rectangle.
 I mean really, Gretsky.
But now, "Surely Allah smiles on us today" I thought, pulling away from the curb in front of Ben's house and picturing the nearly identically-sized Abe portrait as Michael's heir apparant.
So two minutes and three left turns later I pulled up to the front of the bar and did something that a curator of the Green Parrot rarely, if ever, does, hangs something up right away.
If the story was interesting before, here's where it got weird.
As I'm screwing Abe to the wall, and he looks great, by the way, one of two women sitting together at the bar gets up from her stool and asks me, "Are you putting that up because of what day today is?"
Puzzled, I asked her, "I don't know. What day is today".
"Today is the day Lincoln was shot", she answered.
"Are you sure of that", I asked.
If the story was weird then, now it got bizarre.

"I should be" she answered. "I'm the great-great grand niece of Dr. Mudd", and pointing to the younger woman at the bar added she was taking her daughter to Fort Jefferson the next day to visit the cell were the doctor was imprisoned for setting the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth.

I'm not one given to conspiracy theories and the like, but what made Charlie come back after all those years, and made Ben flag me down on that day of all days, after all those weeks of me driving past, what drove me to put it up moments after I got it, in the presence of those two women, stopping briefly into a bar they had never set foot into before.

Here's a picture of our former Disc Jockey, Charlie Flaherty. a.k.a Good Time Charlie at The Great Wall. He did what we all want to do in our heart of hearts and that is:He ran away and joined the circus; more specifically the Far Eastern Division of Ringling Bros-Barnum & Bailey.

The Spam Allstars at The Green Parrot Bar, Saturday, July 3rd, 2010.

Blending latin, funk, hip hop and dub, The SpamAllstars make their
highly anticipated return to The Green Parrot for two
pelvis-grinding nights.

Well known in Miami for their innovative sound, the SpamAllstars
have become the true Miami sound machine, giving South Florida a
premium blend of nostalgic, obscure, and retro sounds which has been
described as retro-Cuban and even as deconstructed rumba.

A self-described descarga or Cuban jam session, DJ Le Spam and the
SpamAllstars are a unique ensemble creating their own niche on the
national music landscape with a prolific recording routine and over
200 show dates a year.

Deftly combining the live performance of his stage mates with a
cornucopia of electronically-evoked samples, DJ Le Spam (Andrew
Yeomanson) projects a distinctly modern voice, resonate of Miami's
very Latin and urban soundtrack.
