Coming Up This Week at The Parrot

Axe-Mangler Popa Chubby at Green Parrot
"Bluesman For The New Millenium"

New York City singer/songwriter/axe-mangler Popa Chubby promises to have Green
Parrot patrons howling when he explodes onto
the stage for two riotous days Thursday and Friday, January 31st and February
1st with shows beginning at
10 P.M.,and for good measure tosses in a 5:30 P.M. "sound check" on Friday.
Popa Chubby's music, forged in the toughness that is New York City,
takes blues to the cutting edge, where it high-fives its contemporary
cousins rock, rap, and hip hop.
With his razor sharp, biting guitar,
vocals from the gut, and top-notch skill as a songwriter, Popa Chubby
artfully combines the rootsiness of blues with the more modern urban
elements of today's popular music.
Popa Chubby has singlehandedly spearheaded a New York City sub-genre
of blues.
The New York sound is as complex as the city itself, melding
a variety of street sounds from hip hop, punk, straight-up rock, R&B,
into an unadulterated blues format. "New York is a melting pot of
social and musical cultures, and New York City Blues is an amalgam of
all those styles," explains Chubby.

From Hoodoo to Digeradoo Harper Brings Down Under Blues to The Green Parrot

Innovative Australian singer/songwrtiter/harmonica virtuoso and
digeradoo performer Harper returns to the Green Parrot Bar on Saturday, February 2nd beginning at 10 PM including a special Saturday afternoon "soundcheck" at 5:30 P.M.
Harper is fast becoming one of Australia's great musical exports.
Besides being the first non-American to sign with the prestigious
independent Blind Pig blues label he has created quite a buzz
throughout the USA. During his tenth and most recent tour his energy
packed, power driven stage performances made him a favorite in such
major festivals as The Rochester International Blues Festival, the
Milwaukee Summerfest and The Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. Super
group Journey caught one of Harper's shows and were so blown away that
they invited him to play with them on their next tour.

Recently in his homeland, Harper was awarded the Male Vocalist of the
Year Award as well as the Song of the Year Award for "I Swear I'm
Innocent" at the Australian Blues Awards. Described as a cross between
John Popper and Dave Matthews, Harper's inique combination of the blues
harp and the digeradoo has created a truly Australian slant on the
roots music genre.

"Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band" at Parrot

Fresh from pulling off a hat-trick of prestigious music awards, namely
The Home Grown Music Awards #1 New Band of the Year Award, The Home
Grown Music Awards Studio Album of the Year, and, last but not least,
fittingly named by The Onion as having one of The Worst Band Names of

Green Parrot on Saturday night, January 26th, beginning at 10 P.M.and
again with a 5:30 "soundcheck" on Sunday January 27th.
These seven guys from Asheville, NC mix triumphant horns, laid-back
grooves, and heavy backbeats to encompass many styles of music that
can only be described as one… Bounce Music. The swarms of swaying
bodies at their shows testify to their thick thump and boundless
energy. The Booty Band cuts to the core of what great live music is
all about: having fun and feeling good. Their energy is contagious and
instantly transforms the average night out into an evening to
remember. They're quickly becoming the hottest new band on the
jam/funk circuit, adding colorful costumes and an interactive stage
personality to make everyone in the room feel right at home. They are
the Booty Band, and they like to put the Live back into Live music!
Booty Band Fans back home are so enthusiastic in their support of
these boys that a large-screen simulcast via the ever-popular Green
Parrot webcam will be aired in The Bier Garden, a favorite haunt in
their hometown of Ashville, North Carolina. Here's a link to a blurb on the event in The Asheville Citizen-Times.

Afro-Latin-funk-jam band Suenalo Explodes Onto The Green Parrot Stage

Saturday and Sunday January 19th and 20th, beginning at 10 P.M.,
Green Parrot patrons will be dancing, twisting and shouting for two
pelvis-grinding nights as Suenalo brings a their 10-piece funk /
afro-beat / jam band to the Parrot stage. Unleashing a barrage of
music that's simultaneously Afro-Cuban, Dominican hip-hop, R&B,
Latin-Funk, Cuban Rhumba, and Colombian Cumbia Suenala promises to
have Parrot dancers on their feet till the wee hours.

Created in 2002 in the vibrant neighborhood of Little Havana, Suénalo
has won legions of loyal fans and recently garnered Best Local Latin
Rock Band honors from the Miami New Times.

The group's 10 members form a multicultural cocktail, a crashing
wave of African beats, reggae, dancehall, and samba that makes Suenalo
one of the most ecclectic bands to emerge from Miami in years.

Melded with horns and gyrating, wah wah-peddled guitars Suénalo's
celebratory jam session becomes an addictive fusion of Afro-Latino
rhythms and American funk that makes one jump in joyful praise.

Astute Parrot regulars will recognize Suenalo's trombone player, Chad
Berstein, as the conch shell virtuoso/trombone player in the Spam
Allstars' horn section when they blew the doors off the place last
year.

Kinds, at the corner
of Whitehead and Southard Streets. For additional information call The

Chickens Will Evolve at Katha's Animal Farm

This letter to the editor appeared in The Key west citizen on Wednesday, January 8th, 2008. Katha Sheehan was the proprietor of The Chicken Store.

Chickens will evolve at Katha's animal farm

As we step into a new year, I have a resolution and a prediction I would like to share.

My New Year's resolution is to buy a property, whether within Monroe County or out, to make my dream of a Rooster Park come true. ...

My vision for the park: it would be a permanent home for all the chickens not wanted in the city of Key West. It would be filled with banyans and fruit trees, and would also double as a pet cemetery (providing income for its maintenance). All kinds of animals would be welcome to coexist there, so long as they are spayed or neutered, and get along with the chickens. ...

Once I secure the property, I will launch a new "Retire a Nuisance Chicken" program: On demand, I will pick up unwanted fowl for $50 a rooster, and the hens for free.

Why? Because faced with the recent $20 fee for chicken pickup, people invariably say: "Just pick up the roosters. Leave the hens, they're OK." This of course splits up happy chicken families — chickens can be very devoted to their spouse and chicks — and also it sets the scene for a whole new wave of nuisance fowl. ...

On Katha's Farm, the eggs will be taken for use, and the population kept stable by attrition.

This brings me to my prediction, which is born of eight years of learning with the chickens. I have discovered how intelligent they are when they are self-selected, streetwise and unrestricted.

Human intelligence wasn't built in a day. How many millions of years did it take us to generate language and discover time? How many millennia more, to organize into stationary communities, and invent the written word? You only get a couple of Einsteins per century. How would we have developed if another species bred us for our hair type or our meat, and were kept in small cages without information or tools? These are the chickens most people know and make fun of.

Wild chickens are smart and adaptable, and have foresight. I am fascinated by the richness (and flexibility) of their language. I have become convinced that we, humans, would be little smarter than chickens if we were raised only with the information provided by our parents and the limits of our neighborhood. Archimedes and Newton would have lived and died in vain; we could not anticipate a hurricane or plan a career; ours would be a hardscrabble existence of tedious food-searching, punctuated by episodes of mortal fear.

... I intend to introduce chickens (and other animals) to technology, once I set up my sanctuary, and film their response. I believe there are many animals ready to leapfrog ahead, even as many backwater humans have with the introduction of cell phones and computers. I want to watch it happen.

My prediction is this: By Jan. 1, 2050, animals will be buying and selling stuff on eBay. Be there.
