"Bong Hits for Geezers.Com" at "soundcheck" this Sunday

Barry Cuda and Kenny Fradley will be appearing with their new band
"Bong Hits for Geezers.Com" at a Green Parrot "soundcheck" this
Sunday, August 5th beginning at 5;30 PM.
They will be performing "Roots Americana", "old timey acoustic", and
"minimalist traditional jazz"(you can't call it Dixieland anymore).
Cuda adds, " I think we can classify this as "your mama's music".
Barry Cuda's counsel insists that the name of the band has nothing to do
with him of course, but is merely a tried-and-true attempt at seeking
attention and press coverage- and more importantly than the music- to sell
t-shirts.

Bonerama at Green Parrot "The Ultimate in Brass Balls"
Bonerama at Green Parrot"The Ultimate in Brass Balls"
With the sheer force of five trombones playing simultaneously as their calling card, Bonerama, brings their thunderous funk attack to the Parrot stage for two nights of pure horn muscle on Sunday and Monday, August 5th and 6th, beginning at 10 o'clock.
"…crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls." – Rolling Stone
When Bonerama struts onstage with its four-trombone frontline, you can guess it's not quite like any rock 'n' roll band you've seen. When they tear into some vintage New Orleans funk, there's no questioning from which city these guys hail. And when those 'bones start ripping into Hendrix and Led Zeppelin licks, all stylistic bets are off.
Even in a city that doesn't play by the rules, New Orleans' Bonerama is something different. They're not a traditional brass band, but they've got brass to spare—even with no trumpets or saxes in sight. Bonerama features a dizzying display of trombone talent; four trombones, to be exact. Band leaders Mark Mullins and Craig Klein (of Harry Connick's band) shelf any jazz subtlety for Bonerama, opting instead for heavy funk, rock 'n' roll, and pure horn muscle. Mullins and Klein are joined by fellow boners Steve Suter and Rick Trolsen, imaginative and dynamic sousaphone player Matt Perrine and edgy experimental guitarist Bert Cotton. The band also features a rotating cast of New Orleans' finest drummers, including Russell Batiste, Stanton Moore, Eric Bolivar, and Terence Higgins.
Bonerama carries the brass-band concept to places unknown. Hailed by Rolling Stone's David Fricke as "The ultimate in brass balls," last Fall the band served as the House Band for the live all-star comedy event COMIC RELIEF. The 2006 event, which featured a long list of A-talent including hosts Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, was recorded live from Ceasar's Palace last November. Recently, Bonerama snagged the coveted "Best Rock Band" honor from the 2007 Big Easy Awards.
Since live performance is what Bonerama is all about, it's no coincidence that their third album, Bringing It Home, is also their third consecutive live disc. It also testifies to the amount of tightening-up the band's done in recent years. Joining another stack of Bonerama originals are covers ranging from the Meters and George Porter Jr. to the Beatles (two from the White Album, no less) to Thelonious Monk. And when they take on Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean" – with trombones doing the familiar backing vocals along with the big guitar riff – you can practically hear the audience's jaws dropping.
The New Orleans-based trombone blitzkrieg was formed when Mark Mullins and Craig Klein found themselves with some rare time off from their steady gigs with Harry Connick Jrs big band. A funk band featuring five trombone players had never been done, even in the "anything goes" environs of New Orleans. Isn't one trombone loud enough? Mullins and Klein didn't think so. Despite their fine abilities in jazz, Bonerama was to worship on the two-headed altar of Jimi Hendrix and The Meters and subtlety was not the foundation upon which Bonerama was to be built. Rock and Roll formed their mission statement, along with the second line funk of their New Orleans roots.
Gathering up a dizzying display of trombone talent, Mullins and Klein quickly brought fellow honking peers Steve Suter and and Rick Trolsen into the fold. Augmenting their horn attack came the imaginative and dynamic sousaphone player Matt Perrine, the edgy experimental guitar of Bert Cotton, and the entrenched rhythmic pocket of drummer Chad Gilmore.
As their sound evolved, it became apparent that their sound was one that defied typical labels. A thunderous funk attack might suddenly turn into an acid rock maeltdown. Their unpredictability was infectious.
After well-received local gigs, a noticeable buzz began to form around the bone-happy upstarts but it has been the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival performances that has truly launched the band, even garnering the attention of Rolling Stone editor David Fricke. Fricke, possibly the most influential rock critic in the country lauded the band's powerful musical presence calling them "the ultimate in brass balls…five trombones blowing power chords and punchy riffs like true air guitars."
Don't miss this chance to see one of the hottest, most creative bands in New Orleans at their only Key West appearance at your favorite Key West music venue, The Green Parrot Bar.

Porcine Battle Royal Shaping Up For This Sunday's Art Show
As a special attraction, this year's show will
include A "Pig-Off", pitting a whole roast pig from Jay's Cuban Box
against pork shoulders from The Big Green Egg of Richard Talmedge
from The Restaurant Store. A tasting will follow with all proceeds
from the pork to benefit Key West High's Pro Start Culinary program.
Looking tan, rested and ready, here is Jay Gogin (bearded on right) with his handler Tom Joris, itching to get started on his whole roast pig from his "la Caja China", a Cuban pig-roasting Box

In a kind of bizarre counterpoint, looking all pink and fuzzy, here is challenger Richard Talmedge ready to crank out some succulent pork shoulders from his Big Green Egg.

The Green Parrot "Off The Wall' Sidewalk Art Show

New Grandfather Roger Doucette from Stone Soup Gallery
Displays Art from Cuba
On Sunday, July 22nd , from noon to 7 PM, The Green Parrot will
host the latest of their "Off The Wall' Sidewalk Art Shows.
Billed as a part of Hemingway Days, the purpose of the "Off The Wall"
SidewalkArt Show is to showcase local artists in particular and help
nurture art awareness in general.
Because of the Parrot's sometimes willy-nilly method of curating
its' eclectic collection of mostly "found" art objects, the
Whitehead Street saloon has long been known to locals as 'The Home of
Great Drinks and Bad Art'.
Manager John Vagnoni says, "Hopefully these art shows, featuring the
work of some wonderful local artists will make The Parrot 'The Home
of both Great Drinks, and Great Art' and also help cement our
reputation as a Cultural Hub of the working class in Key West".
"Cultural hub…are you kidding", added night manager Pat Lonergan,
"This place has got more culture than my refrigerator."
Represented at this year's show on the sidewalk outside the
venerable gin mill will be, among others: David Klein and Roger
Doucette from Stone Soup Gallery, Creations in Bamboo by Madek and
Esther, woodworker Tom Avery and artists Malley Weaver, Rick Worth,
Bob Orlin, Caiman Martin-Smith and Will Fernandez
In addition Tony Gregory's Art Attack will
feature the hand-made jewelry of Christine Scarcella plus whatever Tony
has created that day.
Also available for sale will be the work of those artists
currently displaying their work in Parrotphenalia, the Green Parrot
retail store, including Carrie Disrud, David Wegman, Katherine Doughty,
Louie Hughes, Donnie Speers and Bob Kennedy.
As a special attraction, in what has been the highlight of past shows,
the front yard of Parrotphenalia, the Green Parrot retail store will
be transformed into Jay Gogin's Mud Pi Studio for a day, complete with
potter's wheels where Jay and his assistant Jeff Gibbons will work
their Raku magic for all to see. Jay's exhibition this year will also
include A "Pig-Off" pitting a whole roast pig from Jay's Cuban Box
against porrk shoulders from The Big Green Egg of Richard Talmedge
from The Restaurant Store. A tasting will follow with all proceeds
from the pork
going to benefit the Key West High School Pro Start Culinary Program.
As if that weren't enough for one Sunday afternoon there will be a
fundraiser to help new parents Tim and Lisa Grandy defray the expense
of new daughter Jacquelyn's 6-week stay in a Miami Neo Natal Care
unit. Parrot employees have been scouring the island tirelessly for
weeks collecting prizes from local businesses to fuel the raffle said
Master of Ceremonies Joe Weed. There will be also be prizes, drink
specials and non-stop music from 2 til 7 PM featuring Soul Man Robert
Albury, Blues Rocker Caffeine Carl and firt-time Parrot appearances
fromThe Michael Dixon Band and Roots Rockers Butcher Hollow.
The Green Parrot Bar, located on the corner of Southard and
Whitehead streets is your Southernmost Center for Culture of All
Kinds. Says Vicki Roush, "The Green Parrot Bar, maybe it's not for the
cultural elite, but it's certainly for
the culturally deprived."
