GP OK

You'll be happy to know that the bar fared Wilma's winds and waters fairly well. Some of the staff was not so lucky. Flooding, a blown-off roof, and slight head injury have been suffered by some of your loyal Green Parrot Family. Customers, too, lost quite a lot.

No one was seriously hurt, though, so there's much to be thankful for.

Watch for some photos on the website soon. In the meantime, Kathy Fatica, of Peppers of Key West fame, has posted some photos here.

Wilma, you suck.

Update: Photo gallery now on the site here.

Saturday Morning Update

Annie reports that it's a beautiful morning in Key West, but for the Mighty Moes, the streets are quiet. Many businesses and homes are boarded up, and the waiting is agony. The bar will open on schedule at 10am and remain open until officials say otherwise. Time to worry will come soon enough.

The Key West Citizen has a regularly updated Hurricane Edition online. You might want to check it occasionaly.

Fantasy Fest event updates can be found here and here.

Later, kids.

Uh-Oh

Well, well, well. John's in evac-mode, so we'll be blogging from afar.

Housekeeping, all events cancelled for the weekend. No Goombay, no Coronation Ball, no fantastic live music at The Parrot. It's hunker-down time, kids.

Will try to keep you all posted. Dan will be camping out in the band house again, so perhaps we'll hear from our celebrity maintenance guru on CNN again.

I'm sure all the Mighty Moes are busy boarding up the homes of their bartenders, as is the usual course of things. Free beer will ensue.

Love you all..... Stay safe!

(I may be under the gun soon, too, but will keep you posted as long as possible.)

Public Hanging on Halloween Night

Here's another photo of the boys on Halloween night.
On this night, before the halloween party even began a ten-foot high trailer was rolled up outside of the front door of the bar and there it sat there till near midnite, mysteriously shrouded completely in black plastic.
At the bewitching hour, the plastic was torn away and revealed... accompanied by an audible, horrified gasp from the crowd of revelers outside....a gallows....complete with five prisoners, looking like high-plains drifters, each trussed for execution and each begging for their lives in their own pathetic way.
What struck me most was the way the crowd's mood turned.
Soon, from a mood of initial horror and disgust at the sight of this macabre scaffold, complete with it's trap doors and armed guard, scattered cries of "Hang 'em..Hang em !" could be heard, until the crowd fairly well demanded that their will be done as judge, jury and executioner.
The more the convicts pleaded for mercy, the more the crowd cried out for satisfaction..
In the end it was less a halloween costume than a display of mob psychology.
Ah, the Green Parrot, your Southernmost Center for Frontier Justice.
As kind of a morbid footnote to this story it should be noted that the Monroe County Court House, located across the street and just feet away from The Parrot, was the site of public hangings as recently as the last century. It is said that the citizenry would crowd second-floor verandas on Whitehead Street to get a better view of the proceedings. "The more things change..."

Snowbird

Pictured here is Dick, of Bev and Dick, our only part-time, seasonal employee. His name came up today as we were wondering when they would begin their annual migration south from Boston to Key West. With their Red Sox being promptly dispatched by the White Sox they may want to delay their trip for a bit to avoid the ribbing from any of the Chicago boys and girls at the bar. Come to think of it,being Cubs fans I'm pretty sure everyone here was rooting for the Boston team. Anyway, we're waitin' for you guys.

'55 Caddy

O.K. So this doesn't have anything to do with the bar. Just a nice old sled I saw over in new town.

Albert Castiglia and Graham Drout Come Out Smokin'

The buzz on the street on Saturday afternoon was that the band at the Parrot the night before had blown the room away.
So folks showed up early and with much enthusiasm the see Albert Castiglia and Graham Drout take the stage.

It was obvious from the start that this South Florida 5-piece had something special in store for Parrot patrons this eveninig.
Miami-based bluesman Albert Castiglia is a man with an impressive resume. He was the singer and lead guitarist for The Miami Blues Authority for seven years, named Miami's best blues guitarist in 1997 by Miami New Times magazine and later became lead guitarist and vocalist for the legendary Juniot Wells.
On top of that, making a rare Green Parrot appearance is Graham Wood Drout, the frontman for the south Florida swamp-blues band Iko-Iko. A genuine underground phenomonon, labeled by Blues Review magazine one of America's best kept secrets, Drout writes songs incorporating an eclectic mix of southern musical traditions, Gulf coast Americana, Mardi Gras themes and blues. Little wonder they had 'em hanging from the rafters on Saturday night.

The six-string showdown put on by Drout and castiglia was as good as it gets on the Parrot stage.

Albert's slide work and Graham's gritty vocals had the room riveted from the start.

Obviously enjoying the synergy between them Albert and Graham give the Parrot crowd all they expected...and more.

Kate and Teagan

Here's brand-new Mom Kate with daughter Teagan.
Although I have yet to meet her, the word is that she is every bit as sweet as she looks, which is major league.
This photo was forwarded to me by Chicken and I'm sure Chicken will have more for us as time goes on: i.e.,Teagan in the high chair, in the bath, her first steps, first day of school. the prom...
As cute as she is, I predict a papparazzi-like flurry of activity on her outings.
At any rate, the new family is doing well and we wish them all best.
